The Pacific Electric tracks slice through downtown Garden Grove, circa 1910. Notice the electric poles all along the line. The two-story Garden Grove Hotel near the center of the photo stood at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Garden Grove Boulevard from the 1880s until the 1920s. Courtesy the Orange County Archives.

One of the first acts of the new city council was to ban sewer farms in the city limits. But the City of Anaheim would not be deterred. As opposition grew, Mr. Gilbert tried to back out of the option, but the city forced him to complete the sale. It then turned to the courts, seeking to have the incorporation election overturned, but it was no use. Eventually, the city gave up. And so did Stanton. In 1921, with the threat safely past, the City of Stanton voted to disincorporate. It would be thirty-five years before the city incorporated again.

Stanton’s story is not unique. In 1921, residents of the Orangethorpe area, between Anaheim and Fullerton, learned that the City of Fullerton was eying their area for a sewer farm. Following Stanton’s lead, they voted to incorporate as the city of Orangethorpe. Two years later, after plans were dropped, the city disincorporated. But unlike Stanton, Orangethorpe never revived.
